Wermke/Leinkauf

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, East Berlin artists Matthias Wermke (b. 1978) and Mischa Leinkauf (b. 1977) engaged in a systematic search for “open” public spaces. Their search took them to perilous locations and required months of painstaking research, physical endurance and bravery. In Between is a video installation documenting the artists’ journey on Berlin’s public rail tracks. The title refers to their journey between two subway stations undertaken at night in a self-built handcar. Landmarks is a series of photographs documenting flags they installed at the top of tall urban landmarks. The bright neon colours of the flags – made from recycled reflective vests – stand out like emblems of a new political system proclaiming free access to everyone everywhere
